ABOUT ME AND THE PROJECT

If you would like to contact me, please feel free to e-mail me at: FSACA@hotmail.co.uk .

A little about me...
I am Faye, 22 years old and recently graduated from university. I am currently taking a gap year with the possibility of returning to university late next year. While trying to decide what to do with my gap year I can across African Conservation Experience (ACE), and I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do. Out of all the projects they offer, Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre seemed like the obvious choice, as I've always loved animals. I'm also a keen photographer with a passion for wildlife photography, and as I will be getting up close and personal with the animals at Moholoholo, it seemed ideal from this angle too.

What Moholoholo Rehabilitation centre does...
The Center takes in wildlife from all over South Africa and is well known for its work in the care and rehabilitation of abandoned and injured creatures. These animals are released into the wild once they have regained their health. Those that cannot be released are kept at the Centre and cared for, and are used to educate the many visitors about South Africa's wildlife. The Centre also plays an important role in the breeding and subsequent release of rare and endangered wildlife, including the Crowned Eagle, the Serval and others. The Centre is a non-profit organisation, which is why the money from volunteers such as myself is so important. The Centre just about manages to keep going with donations and the money that people pay for tours.
Some of the animals that are currently resident at the centre are lions (rescued from a circus), leopards, caracals, servals, cheetahs, eagles, vultures and many others.
For some examples of the good work that the Centre does, please visit their blog.

What I will be doing...
I will be working extremely hard while volunteering at the Rehab Centre and will be involved in several different tasks.
Firstly I will be involved in the daily care of animals that cannot be released. This will include feeding, exercising and cleaning of enclosures.
Secondly I will help with the treatment of sick, injured and orphaned animals. This requires a high level of care, particularly for young orphaned animals which may well require bottle feeding and hand-rearing, and round-the-clock care.
I will also assist with veterinary work for animals that have been injured or poisoned, such as bandaging and the treatment and cleaning of wounds.
I may also attend callouts, in order to capture (via darts or humane trapping) animals to bring into the Centre.
Finally, I will be involved in the care, feeding and monitoring of the animals involved in the breeding programmes mentioned above.

Where the money goes...
Clearly this experience is not free, which is why I am raising funds. While I am not sure of the precise breakdown of the cost of the placement, the rough figures are illustrated in this pie chart.
50-60% goes to Moholoholo for the cost of my accommodation, meals, and to the project itself.
15-20% goes towards flights and travel.
20-25% goes to ACE for admin and support, and contributions to worthwhile causes.

I am predominantly raising money for the 50-60% that goes to the Rehabilitation Centre, which I estimate to be approximately £3,800.
Any money raised beyond this amount will go towards the other 40%.
